Comparing CNA Benefits in For-Profit and Nonprofit Nursing Homes

Certified nursing assistants (CNA) working in nonprofit organizations are more likely than CNAs working in forprofit organizations to be offered paid sick leave, paid holidays off, a retirement plan, childcare subsidies or assistance, and health insurance, according to the 2004 National Nursing Assistant Survey (NNAS). A large percentage of CNAs at both types of organizations are offered health insurance. However, more than half (53 percent) of CNAs in for-profit organizations and a third (35 percent) of CNAs in nonprofit organizations do not participate in their organization’s plan. Forty-three percent of CNAs working in for-profit organizations cited cost as the reason they turned down their organization’s plan, while 39 percent of CNAs working in nonprofit organizations said they were covered by another plan. The 2004 National Nursing Assistant Survey, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, is the first national probability sample survey of CNAs employed in U.S. nursing homes.
