The Department of Natural Resources released an informational brochure about properly
disposing household pharmaceuticals. According to the brochure, disposal of pharmaceutical
waste has become a growing concern across the nation. Flushing expired or unused
pharmaceuticals down the toilet or sink can cause harm to septic systems and wastewater
treatment plants, lakes, rivers, ground water, and drinking water. Scientists are concerned
about the effect pharmaceuticals are having on the environment and wildlife.
